Fund Management
The Robertson-Holmes Memorial Scholarship/Bursary Fund was established in September 1967 following the accidental death of teenage college bound students, David Robertson and Stephen Holmes. Founding members included Ivan Robertson, J. A. Campbell, and the Reverend Stewart Clarke. They established a committee to administer the fund which would include representation from the community, the presiding St. Andrew’s United Church minister, and educational representatives from New Richmond High School and Bonaventure Polyvalent. For almost thirty years the fund was diligently tended by Marion Pritchard in her capacity as Secretary-Treasurer. With sincere gratitude and regret, the Committee accepted Ms. Prichard’s retirement from that position in June 2011.
The duties of the committee are to:
- receive memorials
- invest funds
- receive applications
- interview candidates
- grant scholarships / bursaries (dependent upon available funds)
- issue receipts for all monies donated
- present a procedural and financial report to official board and to the congregation of St. Andrew’s United Church
- submit a yearly report for the annual report of St. Andrew’s United Church
- submit its books for an annual audit
The Robertson-Holmes was and continues to be the recipient of monies donated as memorials to loved ones. Some of these are given at the time of death, or, on the occasion of an anniversary of a death, or, of the birthday of a fondly remembered individual. All monies received as memorials are considered capital and are invested with the Fondation Communautaire Gaspesie les Iles. Only the interest from the investments is available for the annual grants to the successful applicant(s). A scholarship/bursary is available for any student who:
- completes the application process
- is a graduate from New Richmond High School OR the child or grandchild of adherents in the congregation of St. Andrew’s United Church, New Richmond graduating from Ecole aux Quatres Vents in Bonaventure, Ecole Polyvalente de Paspebiac, or Ecole Antoine Bernard in Carleton
- is pursuing post-secondary education or vocational training
- has been accepted by an institute of higher learning
- is selected by the Robertson-Holmes committee at its selection meeting
